The Canoe Builder

Passing through Skowkale First Nation yesterday, I drove past a few gentlemen carving dug-out canoes. At first, I kept driving, but my curiosity got the better of me so I quickly pulled a u-turn.

As I stepped out of my truck I was inundated with the smell of fresh red cedar and a gentle wafting of wood smoke. I introduced myself and struck up a conversation and learnt the men were the Chief of the band his son, & nephew, working together just like they have for almost 50 years.

It was an incredibly special moment being let into their world for a bit, sharing stories, laughing, learning, and most importantly, enjoying a different culture right in my own backyard.

After taking some pictures, I said my goodbyes and pulled out of the driveway. I couldn’t help but reflect on “what if i didn’t turn around?” what a special moment that would of been missed.

I often forget to just SLOW DOWN in the hustle and bustle of the everyday. To enjoy the simple things, talk to strangers and hear a new story, seeking those micro-moments that are right in front of me all the time.

I guess the lesson in all of this is follow the curiosity and do more u-turns
